Light It Up: Adding Outdoor String Lights to your Deck

Lights, Camera, Action!

I love how adding some lights to our deck took it from great to even better.

I love the atmosphere that these lights bring.

The deck now seems like a really great place to hang out in the evenings, not just in the mornings when I enjoy opening the door, eating some breakfast and listening to the birds sing.

So fun!

Outdoor lights, you are lovely.

Please feel free and copy! Here is what we used.

2"x2"x8' Boards
for as many posts as your deck has. Try and match the wood your deck is made of. Ours was cedar so we bought 6 cedar 2"x2" boards.

1"x2"x8' Board
Used one of these in cedar as well for a spacer, since the top of the deck rail comes out from the rail, when the 2x2" boards are added to the inside of the deck, a spacer can be used to fill in the gap between the rail and the bottom of the 2x2x8 board. We used a saw at home to cut the spacers to 3 1/2" so it matches the deck railing.

#9 3" Deck Screw
We used 12 of these.

J-Bolt Hooks
We used 6, one for each post to hang the lights from.

String Lights
We used Target's Smith & Hawken lights. What else is new, huh? Gotta love Target.
Here's what we bought, Lights.

Electrical Tape
We used some professional grade electrical tape to tape off the connections between light strands.

Extension Cord
We bought a black outdoor extension cord to connect the bottom of the first strand to the exterior outlet.

Happy Projects!
